Adult male Cuvier's Beaked Whale (Ziphius cavirostris)

This left anterolateral view of the skull of a male Cuvier's Beaked Whale shows the peribullary sinuses (blue), air spaces that surround the bony ear complex (tympanoperiotic complex).  The proposition is that these air spaces help isolate the bony ear complex acoustically.
